My mums friend has had some devastating news and my mum has also taken it badly?

wow! That has to be so hard for everyone involved. I can only imagine the pain this has caused.your Mum is upset because her friend is upset and that is what friends are for. just be there for her to sound off to you and give her advice as you see fit, that is all you can really do. when you get to see your mum in person give hr a huge hug and tell her you admire her for being such a wonderful friend.
