Correct me if I am wrong, but is it illegal for companys to store customer credit card information ?

correct me if I am wrong, but is it illegal for companies to store customer credit card information for future purchases? I bought my daughter a iPod touch and itunes and to register it they want me to give them my credit card info in case I use the store to buy something I think its wrong credit card should only be required at time of purchase.
